Sistema Plastics

Hayden & Rollett engaged MSC for the structural engineering of the $55 million state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution warehouse for Sistema Plastics, one of the largest manufacturing plants in the southern hemisphere.

Overall Supreme Award winner, Best in Category and Excellence in the Industrial category of the New Zealand Property Council Industry Awards 2017

Given its size and scale, the Sistema Plastics manufacturing and warehouse building was a major project for MSC Consulting Group. It is one of the largest manufacturing plants in the southern hemisphere; the warehouse covers 51,000m2 (the equivalent of six rugby fields) and used 1,860 tonnes of steel in its construction. The MSC team looked after the engineering for a building 300m long and 170m wide where the client required unimpeded floor space to enable maximum flexibility and ensure 24/7 production, regardless of any layout changes. Service reticulation also needed to be incorporated in the structure.

The new building is situated conveniently close to international and national transport hubs on the 20ha Auckland International Business Park, and brought together Sistema’s previously dispersed warehousing, manufacturing and distribution operations. It incorporates 3,500m2 of office space and ancillary rooms across 2 floors and is surrounded by 17,000m2 of carpark and yard area.

Sistema believes the new building positions it well for a global future based in New Zealand. Managing director Brendan Lindsay, who founded the company 30 years ago in his garage, believes that Sistema can double its current growth rate in the new facility by continuing to make not just products, but product ranges, tailored for specific markets.

MSC Consulting’s Director Geoff Chilcott says the MSC team has been proud to be involved in the development of this exciting new step in Sistema’s growth. “This is one of the largest single manufacturing/industrial projects we have been involved in. It was not only a large structure with specific design parameters; it also required us to respond to a fast-track design programme. We’re thrilled to have delivered on all Sistema’s requirements and that we’ve been able to be part of enabling Sistema to consolidate its operations on one site.”
