When McLeod Group developed a 17 level apartment building in Vogel Lane, it set a new design standard for central Auckland apartment buildings. MSC Consulting was engaged to provide structural engineering design.
The Alpha Apartments building, on the corner of Nelson Street and Vogel Lane, offers 113 apartments over 14 levels of apartment accommodation, with one-, two- and three- bedroom units, and four penthouse units on the upper level. Three levels of carparking sit below ground level. Within the building at podium level is an internal courtyard.
Thirty two different apartment configurations cater for most needs, and all apartments include balconies and decks with views of the Sky Tower, the Viaduct Harbour and Auckland Harbour Bridge.
The design incorporated a hybrid steel structure with exterior precast concrete cladding panels as shear walls with an Eterpan Ventclad system and vertical Colorsteel cladding. The ground was excavated to nine metres deep for the basement, with temporary retention ground anchors used to support it during construction.
