Airport | Special Purpose | Location: Kerikeri, Bay of Islands | Client: Far North District | Architects: Eclipse Architecture
MSC provided structural engineering design for the expansion of the Bay of Islands Aiport in Kerikeri.
After the old airport terminal building had reached capacity as numbers of visitors had grown by more than a third in 5 years, the green light for the expansion was given.
The new terminal provides more space for passengers flying between Auckland and Kerikeri, the departure and arrival areas are roomier, there is a separate baggage collection area, an elevated pubic viewing gallery and a bookable boardroom-style meeting space.
The expansion also celebrates Māori culture throughout the building with a number of design features and displayed artwork.
Structural Engineers collaborated closesly with Architects and the main contractor to ensure future-proofing of the terminal. If required, in future extra space has been allowed for for full baggage screening, which may become a requirement from the Civil Avaiation Authority.
