Southern Cross Hospital

MSC undertook structural and civil engineering for an extension to Southern Cross North Harbour’s existing medical facility in Glenfield on Auckland’s North Shore.

This project involved building alongside the existing building and providing connection to it. Work on the new facility also had to take into account the need to provide access to and parking for the existing medical facility which houses a hospital and consulting rooms while work was in progress.
The new building has a single suspended concrete floor (with parking underneath) and floor area of 1100m2.
It expands Southern Cross Hospital’s Day Stay and pre-admission service, and enables Southern Cross Hospitals to expand the range of surgical specialties available on site, and support medical specialists operating at the hospital.

A particular challenge on this project was integrating the extension into the existing building. To do this, the Engineers had to design it as a standalone structure with a seismic gap between the new and old.
MSC Director Anil Krishnan says, “This project allowed MSC to extend our experience in the area of health buildings, with the support of medical equipment in operating theatres providing a challenge in the design.”
